Why we are consulting
The Regulation 2022/2371 on Serious Cross-Border Threats to Health introduced a legal mandate for the establishment of EU reference laboratories (EURLs) in public health.
EURLs in the area of public health provide support to national reference laboratories to promote good practice and alignment by Member States on a voluntary basis on diagnostics, testing methods, use of certain tests for the uniform surveillance, notification and reporting of diseases.
The first round of calls for application was launched in 2023. A second round of calls for application was launched in 2024.
The European Commission is now issuing a new call for application related to EURLs in public health in the area of respiratory viruses (selected based on the ECDC opinion documents “Establishment of EU Reference Laboratories for public health in Europe” and “Rapid ECDC advice on the designation of future European Reference Laboratories for public health, March 2025” :
